About Wadestown Library

Our library and community

Wadestown Library

Wadestown library is a branch library in the Wellington City Libraries network. Wadestown's library service first started in 1932 in a building that was previously owned by the Working Men's Club at 46 Pitt Street. On the 29th of February 1988 a new library was built on land gifted to Wellington City Council by the Myers family in memory of their son Philip. The new building was designed by Wellington City Council City Design Team and features artwork in glass over the entrance.

The late poet/author/comedian and ex Goon Show member, Spike Milligan was known to meet a friend and sit on the corner of the land on which the library now sits. Consequently the area was named "Spike Milligan corner" to acknowledge this favourite spot. A seat was installed in Wadestown's Centenary year (1881-1981) and is known as the "Wadestown Centenary Seat".

There is a public toilet available to the side of the library but it is only open during library hours. Just up from the library there is a hairdresser, chemist, dairy, and more public toilets. A telephone booth is next to these toilets and a post box can be found next to the dairy. Wadestown School and pre schools are located nearby. Another dairy is located further down from the library.

More information about local community groups is available from the Wadestown Community Liaison Group website.
